Dear all,
I also discovered that I was unable to formally participate in the
RCPath CPD scheme before passing my Part 2 exam. What I did whilst in
this situation was use the RCPath information for CPD and followed the
portfolio structure, categories and guidelines for claiming points to
produce my own CPD record.
As long as you keep a record for CPD and have some evidence that the
points you are claiming are accurate, HPC do not require you to be a
part of any formal scheme. The important part is that you can prove you
are actively taking part in CPD and could provide some sort of paperwork
should you be audited.
Best wishes

Dear Mailbase Users,
The Royal College website states that:
"Clinical scientists, irrespective of grade, who are actively involved
in training for FRCPath cannot participate in the CPD scheme. Clinical
scientists who are participating in the CPD scheme and later decide to
study for the FRCPath by examination should stop participating in the
scheme during this period of training. Upon attaining the FRCPath they
should re-commence CPD by beginning a new 5 year cycle."
Since the vast majority of HPC registered biochemists (i.e. Clinical
Scientists who are required to do CPD, like myself) that do not yet hold
FRCPath fall into the above category (including those with Associate
membership status- previously dipRCPath, a post-nominal that can no
longer be used following completion of the part 1 exams), I would also
be interested to know how colleagues in this category keep a record of
CPD activities for maintaining their state registration.
Many thanks,
Adam

Dear Mailbase members
Just thought I'd correct any impression anyone may have that you need
FRCPath to participate in the College CPD scheme. All participants,
whether they are FRCPath or non-members paying the annual CPD fee, are
able to utilize the online CPD portfolio. From 1 January 2009, people
working in pathology but not eligible for membership of the College by
other routes will be able to gain Affiliate membership, by completing an
application form, which is reviewed by the College. There is an annual
charge for Affiliate status, and it will not be possible to participate
in the CPD scheme outside of the Affiliate scheme or another recognized
membership grade. There's much more information at:
http://www.rcpath.org/index.asp?PageID=620, and you don't need a College
login to access it!
Hope that's helpful.

Subject: How do you monitor CPD Activities?
Dear Mailbase Users
I wonder if people would be willing to share how they keep a record of
CPD activities for maintaining state registration and what sort of
information you record?
Whilst the HPC gives some guidance on the types of activities that would
be recognised, there is little on the best way to record such activities
- do you keep a log using IT facililties or do you just keep a hand
written document?
What sort of information do you actually record? Do you document that
you have just been to a meeting or do you specifically keep a record of
what was said at a meeting or what you learnt to try and improve your
practice?
I have heard of some people utilisting the online RCPath CPD system, but
you are only able to use this if you hold full FRCPath.
Any information or documents that you are willing to share would be
greatfully appreciated.
Thanks
