You're invited to join us for the first Cambridge Festival of Ideas 22 October - 2 November 2008,
with 200 public events for all ages, most of them free, in arts, humanities and social sciences.
There are also several events which bridge arts and science, including bodyPaint - a chance to paint
an onscreen picture with body movements; Big Draw at the Scott Polar Museum; Lizzie Burns running
art workshops on the nanoworld and a café scientifique on human evolution past, present and future
in advance of the Darwin Festival 2009.
Other highlights include BBC's Evan Davies on everyday economics, a discussion event on whether
Facebook and social networking sites are altering social relationships, and appearances by
children's and teenage authors Louise Rennison, Caroline Lawrence and Michelle Paver. Linguist David
Crystal will also defend his proposition that texting is good for young people's communication
skills, and young people are invited to contribute text poetry via www.festivalofideas.org . This
website also has a PDF of the programme available, or please contact us to request hard copies of
the programme for yourself, or if you may be able to distribute.
The new Festival is organised by the University of Cambridge and is supported by HEFCE and Cambridge
University Press, with numerous external partners including Anglia Ruskin University. The Festival
is brought to you by the team behind the Cambridge Science Festival.
If anyone on PSCI is interested in developing public engagement in arts, humanities and social
sciences research, we are planning to organise a networking event after the Festival, so do get in
touch.
Best wishes
Nicola
