Hi Gunnar
Thanks. In fact a bunch of us back in June thought about using CMap to document some of the discussion and issues. You;ve contributed greatly by doing this. I think what we were thnking about (the idea put on hold as different folks were busy with other stuff including DRS 2008) was something that documented not only the variation in definitions but also some criticla comments on limitations and strengths and even implications of such definitions. These could also be tied into some of the existing 'classic' definitions that have been put out (Simon, Rittel, Frascara, Buchanan, Schon ...) and potentially tied to images, artifacts etc., that different fields associate with design defs (engineering design, industrial design, product design, interior design ...). Anyhoo good on you.

Back in June there was a conversation on this list about a definition of design. I gave up quickly because I found that I wanted to draw my answers more than type them. I've put a Flash movie at http://gunnarswanson.com/definedesign/ that lays out some ideas and questions on the subject. It's a glorified slide show that shows some diagrams and also uses some of my design projects to question my (and others') notions of what design is about. (The first ten minutes are the part that is most directly relevant to the June discussion.)
It's a fairly big download. It takes a couple of minutes on my cable modem/WiFi. It also occupies a fair amount of screen real estate. Don't think that your iPhone (or even a very small laptop) is going to show you the whole thing. There are controls in the lower right to move back one segment (or multiple segments with multiple clicks), back to the start of the present segment, pause, and move ahead one segment (or multiple segments with multiple clicks.)
Sometime soon I'll get around to putting a blog on my site. In the mean time, I hope my effort gets some challenges here.
Gunnar
