medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
From: Ms B M Cook <[log in to unmask]>
> I am forwarding this [edited] query from a non-member (David Wulstan) about
a couple of monks (William of Rievaulx and Guy de Cherlieu) who were
contemporaries / subordinates of St Bernie at Clairvaux and later went on to
be abbots of daughter houses. Any references, esp any contemporary or near
contemporary sources that throw light on this would be very much
appreciated.
> Begins:
> The problem is that Guentner in his edition of the ms [of the "Tonale S
Bernardi"] says that William of Rievaulx was Guy [d'Eu aka Guy de Cherlieu]'s
pupil-master at Clairvaux: Hiley says the reverse. [ie that Guy taught
William, not the other way round.] ... If you have access to anything that
tells us about Bernard, Clairvaux, and what function William
and Guy had there before they moved to their abbacies, I would be v.
grateful.
> Ends.
>...it is references to William and Guy (or William, Guy & Guy) in OTHER
sources that we are seeking.
i know not from Liturgical/musical matters at Clairvaux (or anywhere else, now
that i come to think of it), but a good place to look for original sources
mentioning folks at Clairvaux during Bernie's lifetime is:
Veyssière, Laurent. “Le personnel de l’abbaye de Clairvaux au XIIe
siècle,” Cîteaux, Commentarii Cistercienses, LI, 2000, pp. 17-90.
which is, mostly, following up on the original spadework done by Anselme
Dimier,
“En marge du recrutement de Clairvaux,” in A. Dimier, Saint Bernard
“pêcheur de Dieu” (Paris, 1953), I, pp. 103-127.
and, eps.,
____. “Les religieux de Clairvaux, moines, convers et novices, sous
l’abbatiat de Saint Bernard,” in A. Dimier, Saint Bernard “pêcheur de
Dieu” (Paris, 1953), I, pp. 173-198. [ALF: BX4700.B5 D58]
and
____. “Saint Bernard et le recrutement de Clairvaux,” Revue Mabillon,
XLII, 1952, p. 17-30, p. 56-68 et p. 69-78.
i believe that everyting in Dimier will be in Veyssiere, and then some, the
latter being a very, very thorough piece of work, attempting to Run to Earth
(i.e., to the Primary Sources) every single person who can be placed at C.
during this period.
Williams were pretty Thick on the Ground, but i've never heard of these Guys
--which don't mean anything at all, of course-- and i'm sure that V. has
entries on them.
i've got easy access to the Vessiere, should you need me to have a Look-See
and do some scanning if there's Pay Dirt there.
