medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
St William of Rievaulx was the first abbot of Rievaulx, just as Guy de
Cherlieu was the first abbot of Cherlieu (in the same year, 1131) - hence
their names. Always assuming, of course, that the legends of the founding of
the various abbeys are accurate. (This brings us back to Constance Berman,
of course.)
