The University of Nottingham
(Division of Epidemiology & Public Health)
Bio-Statistician/Epidemiologist (Health Protection) - (Fixed-term, full or part-time)
An opportunity has arisen for the appointment of a Bio-statistician/Epidemiologist based in the Division of Epidemiology and Public Health at the Nottingham City Hospital. With support and guidance from the Chair in Health Protection, the successful candidate will develop and deliver small group teaching (to groups of 2-3 Medical Consultants in Health Protection, Health Protection Nurses or Senior Scientists from the Health Protection Agency, East Midlands (HPA EM)) on the design and analysis of case-control and cohort studies for the investigation (determination of cause) of outbreaks of infectious disease, using conditional logistic regression (STATA® +/- SPSS®).
The person appointed will be expected to develop suitable materials and conduct small group teaching, over a period of months commencing during the autumn 2008. Source material (anonymised datasets from previous outbreaks) will be made available from within the HPA; there will also be access to a computer laboratory on 'teaching days' and all the appropriate software packages and licenses. The ultimate aim is to equip senior Health Protection personnel within HPA EM with the long-term confidence and ability to design and conduct case-control and cohort studies for the investigation of infectious disease outbreaks using appropriately sophisticated multivariable techniques. To this end, suitable simple refresher training materials (not a detailed STATA manual) will also need to be written as a simple reference guide, together with the compilation of at least one 'training dataset' for refresher training.
Although the priority role of this post is described above, depending on the level of support needed by the 15 or so individuals to be trained, there may be time left over to devote to biostatistical support of ongoing epidemiological projects and participation/engagement in research projects.
Candidates must have a degree in a health/biological or statistically related subject, good verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to provide clear, concise and accurate reports working to tight timescales. They should also have demonstrable competency in epidemiology and advanced medical statistics, proficiency with research/database PC packages (Excel, Access, SPSS, STATA), and recent experience in performing statistical analyses using multivariable techniques. Please note that proficiency and familiarity with STATA is essential.
Salary will be within the range £23,002 - £25,135 per annum (pro rata for part-time), depending on qualifications and experience. This post would be optimally delivered by someone with a preference for part-time or flexible hours, although candidates seeking full-time employment will also be considered. This post will be offered on a fixed-term contract for a period of one year (0.5 FTE (half-time)) or for a period of six months (1.0 FTE (full-time)). A range of flexible working options in between these extremes would also be fully negotiable for a suitably qualified candidate.
