medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

yes, but my experience of _niger_ was with a late 11th-early 12th c. family in
the Blesois who carried it (over more than one generation, i believe) as a
cognomen.
c. 1100 a certain Hugo Niger, in the service of the formidable Countess Adela,
ran afoul of the monks of Bonneval and was excommunicated for his trouble by
Bihshop Ivo.
thus, i assume, it did not quite have the anagogical level(s) of meaning which
your Cant. 1:5 reference does.
working with charters is *so* much more straightforward than working with
Scripture, i've always found.
