Yes, I see that now. Apologies for the mis-interpretation.
The huitards had their demonstrations and riots but the latter were no
where near as bad as, say, a Brazillian prison riot wherein scores are
settles, bodies mutilated etc etc. At the start, May 68 was fairly
peacable - occupations, sit-ins, happenings, teach-ins; it was only
when the govt sent in the troops that it got a little more serious.
I'm curious as to why the French Govt didn't do the usual of "embrace,
extend, extinguish". After all, a movement whose motto was "Words, not
action!" couldn't have done much harm surely. Maybe the authorities
were expecting a return of the communards. Maybe the authorities,
still inflected with remnants of the Vichy and collaborationists would
brook *no* socialist "uprising". A riot, though, gave the govt post
facto justification, and smeared the uprising and added to the
mythologising of the 68 generation.
In addion, I see that you Dave, are not only a poet, a mystic, a
mathematician, but also a man of action!! By eck, where do your
talents end? Truly a renaissance man!! You put us sad worms scribbling
away in our cupolas to shame. If only I could claim to lead such an
interesting life.
