medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
The Capela Xeral das Ánimas (the closest you can get to 'All Souls') in
Santiago de Compostela was founded only in the eighteenth century, but even
then under the advocation of the Santísimo Cristo da Misericordia -- not the
souls themselves. Other chapels, particularly cemetery chapels, do seem to
subsist under the advocation of 'chapel of souls', but they are all very
much post-medieval.
My understanding of medieval and Renaissance bequests is that one could
leave moneys etc. for masses to be said for the souls in purgatory (usually
including one's own family in particular) but one would not leave anything
to them. I doubt they could own property in the way that a named saint
could. In that sense 'All Hallows' provides a similar problem. Just who did
the church belong to? And if you let your sheep stray onto the church's
land, who was expected to turn up in your dreams and warn you off? My
limited experience would suggest that the advocation is usually 'St N. and
All Saints', just to make matters clear.
Anthony.

Jon,
Their web site claims they are the oldest church in the City:
http://www.allhallowsbythetower.org.uk/
The history pages do not mention a name change,.
