The kind of sentiments (apparently -- since I'm still wondering if this is
a joke) expressed by James below have quite regularly been expressed
(privately) by white male academics in Canada. I undertook a small
empirical research project into gender equity hiring in Canadian academe**
and found that there were indeed now proportionately more women in Canadian
academe than was the case a decade earlier. However, this proportion had
increased not because more women were getting hired, but primarily because
so many white men had retired, thus significantly reducing the number of
white men in the academy than ten years earlier. Hiring rates for women, in
spite of concerns expressed by socially conservative commentators and
academics -- had stayed about the same over the period. Audrey Kobayashi
similarly found that after ten years of ostensible 'equity' hiring, the
proportion of the academy comprised of people of colour remained at just 2%
in Canada.
It's always interesting to see how some members of (identifiable) groups
respond when whiteness and masculinity are challenged as NOT being
meritorious characteristics for hiring in the academy...
