Ian et al,
With the explanations Ian gives, I can appreciate his definition. The one
thing that bothers me is this: I take it as axiomatic that there is no
'intent' in natural systems. Evolutionary adaptation, for me, requires no
intent. It's a process that follows rules, and just does so without any
self-awareness. If your philosophy is different, please understand I mean no
insult.
So from my point of view, I worry that using 'adaption' could lead people to
believe that there is either (a) no intent in designing, or (b) intent in
natural systems adaptations. Both are, for me, wrong.
This is one reason I prefer 'seeking balance' rather than adaptation. But I
*think* we're talking about the same thing.
Ian also brings up an interesting project: connecting context to all our
definitions. This would surely help anyone looking for common qualities,
whether or not for the sake of finding a universal definition.
Cheers.

> Adaptation:- action or process of adapting or being adapted- biological change in an organism or species to become better suited to its environment, or the process of making such changes
> Representation:- action of speaking (communication) - a depiction of something - perception, opinion or statement- artifact, representation of culture

Which then leads me to think would it be more valuable for us as individual design disciplines to agree what design is first in context, to then find common definition?
