medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Chaucer's tale of January and May, The Merchant's Tale, and the rest
of the Canterbury Tales generally may be the most fun place for you
to start. Marriage is of enormous interest to Chaucer and his
English contemporaries (like John Gower, who married late in his
life) and hence, of enormous interest to Chaucerians and other middle
English scholars, who trace questions about and treatments of
marriage through all the usual suspects, such as Peter Lombard and
Robert Grosseteste, but who also explore its legal and social
histories in great detail. It is a field very rich in texts and
critical work on those texts. For instance, I have on my desk and am
about to dig into Emma Lipton's new book, Affections of the Mind: the
Politics of Sacramental Marriage in late Medieval English Literature
(Notre Dame UP, 2007).
Best wishes,
