medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Meg,
There were different types of Blood cults, including Bleeding Hosts,
relics that were supposed to represent blood shed by Christ at His
Circumcision and blood shed on Calvary. Much of this is covered by
Caroline Bynum in her recent book Wonderful Blood ( Philadelphia :
University of Pennsylvania Press, c2007.). Included are cults of the
precious blood in Mantua, Weingarten and Westminster Abbey. There were
hot disputes about the status of the blood shed on Calvary in the 15th
century. Pius II tried to get the Dominicans and Franciscans to stop
arguing about that in public. [The bibliography for Blood devotion is
extensive, but Bynum cites much of it.]
The /Catholic Encyclopedia/ says such a feast was not extended to the
Roman Catholic church world wide until the reign of Pius IX in the 19th
century [http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/12373a.htm].
