Making students submit their work as *.rtf would prevent the macro scam referred to -- but since Word allows one to save files *named* "*.rtf" when they are actually *.doc format, one would need an automatic way of either checking the actual format, or of forcibly converting batches of files.
Presumably either of these could be done using macros (thus biting the biter).
