Hey (Dr?) Astrid,
Frascara's 'communication design' textbook is nice, but specific
to visual communication design:
http://www.amazon.com/Communication-Design-Principles-Methods-Practice/dp/1581153651
Nelson and Stolterman's is good for liberal arts though more
about design than how to:

It's a bit left field, but I've always loved Exploring Requirements:

Dear all,
I am looking suggestions for a textbook for a course on Design. The course
is taken in the second or third year of a four year liberal arts degree. The
students will be majoring in business administration, management information
systems or computer science. I am taking over the course the coming
semester; previously the following books have been used:
- Tools and Tactics for Design by Peter Dominick et al.
- Product Design and Development by Ulrich, Karl and Eppinger
Comments on the books listed above and suggestions for other books are
greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Best,
-Astrid
