Goldblum (26) in 1954 showed that barbiturates could be incorporated
in hair of guinea pigs. Baumgartner et.al in 1997 (27) showed that by
sectioning hair, chronic use of opiates can be detected. Recently a
number of authors (15;16;28;28-31) have reviewed hair as the matrix
for the detection of chronic drug use including alcohol. Politi
et.al. (31) investigated the relationship between daily ethanol
intake and the concentration of ethyl glucuronide in hair in three
groups of subjects. Their subjects consisted of teetotallers,
alcoholics and volunteers who self-reported daily ethanol intake
between 2 g and 60 g (moderate and non-moderate drinkers). EtG was
not found in the hair of teetotallers. All non-moderate drinkers and
alcoholic in withdrawal had EtG levels greater than 4pg/mg
hair. These authors conclude that EtG concentration in hair
correlates with the amount of daily ethanol intake
