Dear Friends,
Just another thought -
Not only women wore skirts - monks &c did so too and
for them riding on
horseback would pose similar problems.
The Rule of St Benedict says in Chapter LV The
Clothing and Footwear of
the
Brethren:
"... Those who are sent on a journey should get
drawers from the
wardrobe,
which they should wash and give back on their return."
(Trans. Abbot
Parry)
I had always assumed that these undergarments were a
matter of modesty
when
venturing into The World, but I am now wondering if
this was (also ?) a
provision for the comfort of a monk travelling on
horseback ?
If so, would not women find a smilar solution to a
similar problem ?
These are presumably not leather "drawers" as they are
to be washed =
wool
or linen may be assumed .

This is an interesting suggestion. I've always assumed
clergy on longer journeys and ceremonial journeys (eg
accompanying a monarch or other feudal superior on an
entry to a city) would be be on horseback, otherwise
the Church is made to look inferior (as one of the
footmen) by comparison. The drawers or other suitable
padding would be very welcome. One could of course
arrange the long medieval shirt to advantage but doing
so in public wd be very undignified.
I've also always assumed secular clergy could wear
whatever the other men were wearing UNDER the clerical
gown-- as nowadays under a cassock. Is there any
evidence known?
