Dear Terry and listers
I think Terry's questions are very apposite here. I wonder at the temerity or foolishness of SOME designers (in their typically 'in-house conversations) who seem to think they can dispense with the scholarship, history and practice that lies behind, for example, organizational learning and development, political and economic development, social, health, community development to name just a couple of domains that the star designer with his new ways of thinking can somehow dispense with - I've heard these claims about the special purchase designers have on the world and - outside of the little circle of designers huddled around their campfire it just looks ridiculous. To do a good job on anything means spending a long time reading, analysing, talking to others etc - all the things we know are typically of academic discourse communities. Because you think you have some imaginative, creative ability and can see things differently (designer talk and very debatable) it doesn't make you the cutting edge expert you think you are. Try convincing the WHO, FMI ... that designers (whatever that means) can and should lead the world. Come on!
