In English, to apply the meaning of the word "hospital" soley to a place
for the sick is a later development of the use of the term. Earlier, a
place for the charitable giving of shelter lodging to travellers or
others would have been known as a hopital.
Remember Anthony Trollope's "The Warden"? Hiram's Hospital was not a
place for the sick.
