medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear Terri,
To my eyes, this looks Scandinavian indeed. The ornamented dragon reminds the Urnes style, which is considered to be the last of the Viking art styles, named after Urnes church in Norway. The style of the panel also reminds me of the style of some baptismal fonts in the island of Gotland, which also were important export goods.
I hope to be able to get a friend who is an art historian and specialist of these fonts to look at the images. I will come back to you in that case.
Best wishes,
Anders Fröjmark

medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
A friend went exploring this last weekend and took pictures of a carved panel at Southwell Minster church. He posted a set of pictures at his website www.colanhomm.org/SouthwellPanel along with some questions/thoughts about its providence. I was curious about what readers of this list think of his question concerning the possibility that it might be Norse(Viking era) rather than Anglo-Saxon.
thank you,
Terri Morgan
