Dear List Members
You may be interested to know that Cheltenham Science Festival is going to
America! Just like its sister festival, the first Cheltenham International
Science Festival in St Louis will be a five day celebration of science,
engineering and the arts, offering a great opportunity to interact with
science and scientists. It will have all the debates on hot topics,
interactive displays, eminent scientists, fun-packed children’s events and
amusing evening entertainment that are synonymous with the Cheltenham
brand. Its programme will be both entertaining and challenging featuring
events like a guide to the science of laughter alongside debates about stem
cell research, climate change and the existence of an intelligent designer.
The Cheltenham International Science Festival in St Louis will be held from
9-13 October 2008 at the St Louis Science Center. The reason for the choice
of St Louis for this first Cheltenham Science Festival outside the UK is
that it is one of the top five Science Centers in the US and is leading the
trend of shifting focus from children to adults and so we will be trying
out several different formats to engage adults in discussion about science
as well as show that science can be accessible and fun to an adult audience.
Frank Burnet is the Artistic Director for the festival and we are currently
working with staff from the St Louis Science Center to put together the
programme. A small group of UK speakers will be taking part but the
majority of speakers will be US based. If anyone has any recommendations of
speakers who are based in the US or if you would just like to know more
please do not hesitate to contact me.
