The ULRLS comprise the central libraries of the federal University of
London - the Senate House Library and the Institute libraries of the School
of Advanced Study. Senate House Library, where this post is based, is a
major research resource for the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences.
Project Cataloguer: E G R Taylor Collection of Historic Printed Maps
Fixed term: 2 Months
£28,800 - £34,930 p.a. inc. LW
Special Collections in Senate House Library comprise rare books, archives
and manuscripts, the historic printed maps collections and Palaeography and
Manuscript Studies and Book Studies Collections. The collections cover the
broad arts, humanities and social sciences and the history of sciences and
medicine, and support studies from art to women’s history.
Applications are invited for this full-time post,(available immediately)
which has been created following a generous grant from the Friends of
Senate House Library.
The Collection comprises some 850 sheets, is of European-wide scope and
dates entirely from between 1700 and 1900. Particular highlights include
maps of the Italian States, France, Belgium and the Netherlands and
military maps from the Cumberland Collection.
You will catalogue the maps to agreed standards, check their physical
condition and liaise with the Conservation Team as necessary. In addition,
you will contribute to promoting access to the collection by preparing
content for web pages and guides as appropriate.
Of demonstrable graduate calibre you will possess good written
communication skills as well as be a motivated self-starter who can work
with minimal supervision and training to achieve pre-determined outputs and
standards. You will have previous experience or other demonstrable ability
to work successfully in an academic or similar environment, in addition to
previous experience of cataloguing maps, online cataloguing and handling
rare and fragile materials.
