ENSEMBLE POST-PROCESSING SCIENTIST
Based Exeter
Starting salary £21,000 to £25,500 + competitive benefits including
Civil Service Pension
Weather forecasting is an uncertain science, and ensemble forecasting
allows us to estimate the uncertainty in each forecast we issue.
Statistical post-processing is applied to model output to optimise the
quality of weather forecasts and to calibrate probabilities from ensembles.
The Ensemble Forecasting Group provides a complete service from research
on ensemble methods, through development of products, to a consultancy
service to help customers exploit the forecasts. You will join the
product development team to research and implement post-processing
techniques, and optimise probabilistic forecast products to meet the
needs of customers.
You will have a background in a mathematical science, with research
experience in application of statistics. You will also have good
scientific computing skills. You will bring an interest in the use of
probabilities to communicate uncertainty in weather forecasts, and an
enthusiasm to improve the quality of services to customers. Experience
in the verification or calibration of weather forecasts would be a
particular advantage.
