Leeds/Bradford: Wednesday 16 April, 2.30pm, Leeds University
Frank Duckworth (Editor, RSS News).
The D/L method: eleven years on.
The talk will describe why and how the D/L method for resetting targets in rain-interrupted one-day
cricket matches came about and the way the mathematics of the method has since been upgraded to take
advantage of the increasing availability of computers in scorers' boxes. The experience from over
800 applications world-wide will be reviewed.
Bill Gerrard (University of Leeds).
Shirts, Suits and Statistics: Applying Moneyball to the Beautiful Game.
I start with an introduction on how the Oakland A's have successfully implemented a more statistical
approach in Major League Baseball (documented in the bestseller, Moneyball by Michael Lewis, Norton,
2003) and then talk about the problems of applying statistics in complex invasion team sports such
as football. I then look at specific applications I've developed (such as transfer valuation and
player ratings).
The meeting will be held at Leeds University’s Roger Stevens Building in RSLT 10, starting at
2.30pm. Refreshments will be available from 2pm in the foyer of level 9 of the School of Mathematics.
