Yes there is an odd situation with CSD. It is the Chartered Society OF
Designers. That is, the society is chartered, not the designers.
Chartered status in any of the professional bodies is a big thing here
and difficult to get, and I remember it being a lengthy affair for the
CSD to apply to the Privy Council and obtain its charter. I wasn't in
on the detailed workings of this process at the time, but I gather
that the Privy Council would not allow the charter to go as far as
giving the society powers to invest chartered designers, as for
example the IMechE can do. Though I used to be a fellow, I was not
chartered. I'm fairly good with charts though.
Incidentally, I discovered only a few days ago that the new President
of CSD is Professor Clive Richards from Coventry University. This is
the first time in a very long while that the president is an academic.
This is a welcome change. And I am pleased to say that Clive is also
very active in research, and a research director of a major school of
design.
