medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Everybody interested in medieval history should visit the papal palace at
Avignon. It's thoroughly medieval, intricate, wonderful, spooky and creepy
at the same time. Of course it has been stripped of most of its interior and
especially the furniture and wall hangings (the bedchamber of Clement ? is
still very medieval though), but for athmosphere it can't be beaten.
Henk
my Original Med History prof, a thousand years ago, once put up a quite
grungie b&w slide of the Chateauneuf in Avignon and called it "the first
high-rise office building."
when i finally saw it in the flesh some time later, i had to agree --it is
*such* a modern-looking building.
