medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Salutations, one and all! Happy New Year!
There is a WONDERFUL new book, *Scenting Salvation* by
Susan Ashbrook-Harvey, that examines lots and lots of
olfactory imagery and experiences in late antique and
Byzantine Christianity.
There is a very distinct odor of sanctity if the saint
is alive; the absence of stench (or presence of
distinct fragrance) is associated with a holy corpse.
