medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
It's an interesting book that was provocative in its time. But in some respects it's a misfire. Which, along with the book's length, is part of my rationale for advising one to read the reviews. E.g., those by Jean A. Truax, _Speculum_ 68, No. 3 (Jul., 1993), pp. 768-770; by R.A. Markus, _English Historical Review_ 107, No. 423 (Apr., 1992), pp. 378-380; by Jacqueline Simpson, _Folklore_ 104, No. 1/2 (1993), pp. 180-181; by William Monter, _Journal of Social History_ 26, No. 1 (Autumn, 1992), pp. 200-201; by Frederick S.Paxton, _The American Historical Review_ 97, No. 3 (Jun., 1992), pp. 830-831; or by Christopher M. Bellitto, _Sixteenth Century Journal_ 26, No. 4 (Winter, 1995), pp. 1048-1049. Of these, if I remember rightly, Simpson has the sharpest critique.
Best again,
John Dillon
