medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
From: "George R. Hoelzeman" <[log in to unmask]>
> So. . . . what would a 1st C. Jewish cabinetmaker have built? chests?
wooden plates....I seem to recall that the clothes cabinet did not come into
existence until the Quatrocento
i think that the Egyptians (at least) produced a *lot* of very sophisticated
woodwork (nearly all of which has perished, remember) which would fall into
the catagory of "cabinetmaking" (joinery) --lots and lots of chests, shrines,
doors.
the Romans, as well, had plenty of tools appropriate for joinery --chisels,
even metal planes.
> George (thinking Joseph may be more connected to his profession than
previously thought)
c (thinking that it might not be possible to reconstruct what Joe's profession
was, given the rather scanty condition of the evidence)
