L. S. Sacker, K. E. Saunders, Beryl Page, and Margaret Goodfellow.
DILITHIUM SEQUESTRENE AS AN ANTICOAGULANT J Clin Pathol. 1959 May;
12(3): 254–257 is not as early as your reference, but they cite
Proescher F. (1951) Proc Soc Exp Biol and Med (NY) 76, 619 together with
Hadley & Larson for the use of disodium EDTA as an anticoagulant for
haematology. Sacker's interesting proposal was the use of LiEDTA for
both haematological and common biochemical analyses. Hoch & Chanutin's
paper "Effects of anticoagulants on serum and plasma" (concerning
protein electrophoresis) was published in the Journal of Biological
Chemistry in 1952 and they also cited Proescher's 1951 paper.
But EDTA was first synthesised in the late 1930's so there may be still
earlier references out there!
Happy New Year,

Having read "The role of EDTA as in vitro anticoagulant for
diagnostic purposes" (Clin Chem Lab Med 2007;45:565) I can not resist
asking you about the first-ever appearance of EDTA as in vitro
anticoagulant in the scientific literature.
I do hope that some of the older (sorry: more experienced) fellows
still have (old-fashioned ?) notes on that ...
