medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Delighted to have provoked an as yet lively (and peaceful) discussion. Perhaps my title (Kyria Eris, I think) and golden apple will have to be returned to Brenda.
Permit me to whittle my query down to one item: was the name given to the ceremony for the enthronement (substitute any other word you wish) of any monarch of any sort as patently religious as "le sacre du roi"? BTW, if anyone knows when this exact terminology came into use, that would be swell.
Let me pose this to Diana directly. We're in Byzantium at any given date, medieval of course. Fill in the blank: "Say, today is the day for the [ ] of our basileus, isn't it?" We're referring of course to his taking the throne or whatever he took.
And the same question goes to anyone else who wishes to substitute another place for "Byzantium," "England," for instance.
Many thanks for all the responses,
MG
