Translation: Process and Performance
Friday 23 and Saturday 24 November 2007
at the IGRS
Organised by
Betwixt and Between: The Queen's University Belfast Research Forum in Translation and Cultural Encounter (David Johnston: [log in to unmask])
and
Spanish and Spanish American Studies, King's College, London (Catherine Boyle: [log in to unmask])
There has been considerable interest in theatre translation over the last ten years, much of it deriving from the issues raised in the seminal Stages of Translation (ed. Johnston: Bath: 1996). This has led to key works such as The Moving Target (ed. Upton: Manchester: 2000), Time-Sharing on Stage (Aaltonen: Manchester: 2001), and Drama Translation and Theatre (ed. Coelsch and Klein: Frankfurt: 2004). However, these works tend to restrict their discussion to translation and product. This conference seeks to re-graft this discussion back into the practice of writing translations for performance. Moreover, the notion of performance is broadened to include any text that is prepared for delivery to a live audience.
Poet Ciaran Carson will be a special contributor, and the following plenary speakers are confirmed:
Sirkku Aaltonen (University of Vaasa, Finland)
Catherine Boyle (King's College, London)
Eva Espasa (University of Vic, Catalunya)
Joe Farrell (University of Strathclyde, Glasgow)
David Johnston (Queen's University Belfast)
Stephen Kelly (Queen's University Belfast)
Dennis Kennedy (Trinity College Dublin)
