The following positions, especially the first, may be of interest to
geoscientists on this list who have special interests and experience in
teacher education or professional development. The positions are at the
Paleontological Research Institution (PRI), a natural history museum in
Ithaca, NY (U.S.A.), which has an active Earth system science educational
outreach program; PRI runs the Museum of the Earth, an exhibits and
education facility that opened in 2003. Thank you.

1. Position available: Teacher Resource Developer in Earth System Sciences
at the Paleontological Research Institution (PRI), Ithaca, NY

Description: The Paleontological Research Institution (PRI) has an
upcoming opening for a Teacher Resource Developer in Earth system science.

This position is funded over the next five years by a National Science
Foundation grant to develop teacher professional development resources to
help teachers use real-world regional and local Earth system science as
the focus of an inquiry-based, systems approach to teaching Earth science.
The project expands upon existing "Teacher-Friendly Guides" to Earth
science of the Northeastern and Southeastern U.S. and associated teacher
professional development approaches.

This position involves writing and page layout for Teacher-Friendly Guides
to five other regions of the U.S. The project also incorporates
facilitating teacher construction of interactive teaching tools such as
virtual fieldwork, overseeing creation of a website for collaboration and
sharing resources, and using the materials in the context of teacher
workshops. The position will involve working collaboratively in each of
the five regions with geoscientists providing up-to-date content for each
topic in each region, and with secondary school teachers in advisory
panels, workshops, and reviewing.

Qualifications: MS or PhD in some area of Earth system sciences, and
understanding of best practices in Earth science education and teacher
professional development. Should have passion for Earth system science and
Earth science education, and must have excellent communication skills,
especially writing.. This is an excellent position for someone who would
enjoy collaborating with geoscientists and science teachers from across
the country. This position is best for someone who enjoys using web-based
technology and has the capacity for traveling to numerous meetings and
conferences. Position will begin in early 2008.

About the organization: PRI has an active and growing outreach program in
Earth system science education. In 2003 PRI opened the Museum of the
Earth, a major natural history museum in Ithaca, NY. The Paleontological
Research Institution (PRI), founded in 1932, is a dynamic fast-moving
institution with one of the largest research collections of fossils in
North America. More information about PRI can be found at www.priweb.org
and www.museumoftheearth.org. Ithaca is home to Cornell University (with
which PRI is affiliated), Ithaca College, and numerous cultural
organizations, and is set in the beautiful Finger Lakes region of rural
Upstate New York.

Applications: Applicants should send a cover letter describing your
interest in and qualifications for the position, a resume/CV, and a list
of three references (including address, phone number, and e-mail address)
by email to [log in to unmask] or by mail to: Director of Education,
Paleontological Research Institution, 1259 Trumansburg Road, Ithaca, NY
14850. We will begin review of applications December 10, 2007.

A second position (Teacher Development Coordinator in Earth System
Sciences) is also being advertising that focuses upon coordination of
teacher participation in workshops and advisory panels and upon online
interaction and resources.

2. Position available: Teacher Professional Development Coordinator at the
Paleontological Research Institution (PRI), Ithaca, NY

Description: The Paleontological Research Institution (PRI) has an
upcoming opening for a Teacher Professional Development Coordinator in
Earth system science.

This position is funded over the next five years by a National Science
Foundation grant to develop teacher professional development resources to
help secondary school science teachers use real-world regional and local
Earth system science as the focus of an inquiry-based, systems approach to
teaching Earth science. The project expands upon existing
"Teacher-Friendly Guides" to Earth science of the Northeastern and
Southeastern U.S., creating Guides and teacher resources for each of five
other regions of the U.S.

The position involves two related means of coordinating teacher
participation in the project: (1) organizing logistics of workshops and
ongoing teacher support, working collaboratively in each of the five
regions with secondary school teachers in advisory panels and workshops;
(2) management of online resources and interactive tools associated with
the project website (which will be created by an outside vendor). The
online resources will include the Teacher-Friendly Guides themselves,
together with an associated virtual fieldwork database and a variety of
other tools for teacher interaction and learning.

Qualifications: Must have experience in secondary school science
education, in use of online collaborative tools, and website development.
Should have passion for Earth system science, Earth science education, and
best practices in teacher professional development. This position is best
for someone who enjoys using web-based technology, would enjoy organizing
workshops, and has the capacity for traveling to numerous meetings and
conferences. Must have excellent interpersonal skills. Position will begin
in early 2008.

About the organization: PRI has an active and growing outreach program in
Earth system science education. In 2003 PRI opened the Museum of the
Earth, a major natural history museum in Ithaca, NY. The Paleontological

Paleontological Research Institution, 1259 Trumansburg Road, Ithaca, NY
14850. We will begin review of applications December 10, 2007.

A second position (Teacher Resource Developer) is also being advertising
that focuses upon working with geoscientists and teachers to write five
regional "Teacher-Friendly Guides," and to help design the project website
and online materials.
