Background: The "Computationism as a Foundation" (Comp-View) Center
at the Tokyo Institute of Technology was established in July, 2007
as a Global Center of Excellence (GCOE) by the Ministry of Education,
Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (MEXT) GCOE program.
"Computationism" is a framework which seeks to rethink various
scientific phenomena from the point of view of computation. The
GCOE will develop theories and technologies in order to explore
this framework.
This recruitment is related to the research activities of the
following researchers at the GCOE: Yutaka Akiyama (bioinformatics),
Yoshiyuki Kabashima (statistical mechanics), Masashi Sugiyama
(machine learning), Hidetoshi Shimodaira (statistical science),
Shigeru Mase (statistics), Sumio Watanabe (mathematical
information science).
Hours: 40 hours per week.
Term: The standard term will be 2 years (annual, renewable contract).
Location: Tokyo Institute of Technology
(either Ookayama campus or Suzukake-dai campus)
Salaries / Support: Salaries will be paid on an annual scale
according to Tokyo Institute of Technology policies. Salaries
will be comparable to Japan Society for the Promotion of Science
(JSPS) Postdoctoral Fellowships. In addition, the GCOE plans to
provide approximate 700,000 yen per year for research support.
Start Date: April 1, 2008, or as early as possible after April 1,
2008 (no later than October 1, 2008).

Qualifications: Must have received a doctoral degree, or expecting
to receive a degree by starting date. Candidates must have the
ability to carry out research in statistical machine learning,
bioinformatics, and related fields of computer science and
information science.
*) Preference will be given to candidates who have completed a
doctorate at an institution other than the Tokyo Institute of
Technology. Candidates with a doctorate from the Tokyo Institute
of Technology should have at least 2 years of research at another
institution.
