***To all interested in the Edinburgh Local Group of the Royal Statistical Society (RSS)***
We are delighted to announce breaking news: Edinburgh has been chosen as
the venue for the RSS Conference 2009! The provisional theme for the conference is "Statistics in a changing society: 175 years of progress", covering all kinds of Statistics and with a special eye to the development, history and future of the subject. The conference forms part of the Society's 175th anniversary celebrations. Members of the Local Group supported the bid actively and, as a Local Group, we'll continue to be heavily involved in the preparations and Conference activities.
Already things are warming up. The Programme Committee, which decides the detailed themes and speaker lists, is expected to form in early 2008 and nominations for membership are expected to be in by 21st December 2007.
The Committee membership will attempt to cover as many different interest groups and sectors as possible as this will be a general conference, however due to the limited number of places on the committee we cannot guarantee that all nominees will be given places. Members of the programme committee will be expected to take a proactive role and contribute to the identification of speakers, organisation of sessions and consideration of abstracts so only willing and enthusiastic volunteers should be nominated. There are usually a minimum of 2 planning meetings plus an additional meeting to consider the submitted abstracts, although this need not involve all committee members).
All members of the RSS or of the Local Group are eligible to nominate individuals, including themselves and to be nominated. If you would like to submit a nomination, please send it, with relevant biographical detail and support, to Paul Gentry at [log in to unmask] by 21 Dec 2007. Paul will be happy to answer any further questions about the nomination process and the committee function.
Of course, the Programme Committee is not the only way you can contribute to the running of the conference. We will also be asked for volunteers to join the local organizing committee. This is the team who plan the social programme, the logistics and the smooth running of the event.
We all look forward very much to this exciting event in 2009 and will aim to continue to keep you up to date with Conference developments at Local Group Meetings and through occasional email messages.
