quality of life:

Research Fellow
Department of Geography
Faculty of Science, University of Portsmouth
(12 Month Fixed Term Contract)
Salary: £29,139 - £31,840
Reference: RSCI0242
Closing date: 7 December 2007
Working under the supervision of Dr Liz Twigg and Professor John Mohan
(University of Southampton), the postholder will undertake quantitative data
analysis of the British Crime Survey, linked to census data. The post is
funded by the ESRC, as part of its Understanding Population Trends and
Processes (UPTAP) initiative, and the project will investigate neighbourhood
social heterogeneity and perceptions of quality of life. The tasks of the
post holder will include data cleaning, sorting, recoding and multilevel
modelling of variables relating to perceptions of the neighbourhood
environment and social cohesion. The successful candidate will also be
expected to assist in literature searches and the preparation of academic
papers, under the direction of the project team.
Applicants should have a good undergraduate honours degree and a relevant
postgraduate qualification. Precise disciplinary background is less
important than experience in quantitative social science. Good statistical
modelling skills with some knowledge of SPSS and either STATA or MLWIN (or
an equivalent statistical package) are essential.
This is an ideal opportunity for an early-career researcher to use their
quantitative research skills in researching a highly-topical social issue.
For an informal discussion about this post, please contact Dr Liz Twigg on
02392 842466 or Professor John Mohan (02380 595857).
