medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Hi Marjorie,

Well, if you think the Valois line wasn't Capetian, that would have been
true. As it turned out Philip IV's three (3) sons succeeded him successively
and were all dead by 1328 (a plot?). His grandson Jehan, born in 1316 to
Louis X (king 1314-1316) and his wife, was nominated (do you call it that?)
but he died the same year. So Philip's nephew, another Philip took the
throne under the number VI, as another Philip, son to Philip IV, reigned
from 1316-1322 as number V and was succeeded bij Charles IV who was king
from 1322-1328 and had no son either. Edward III of England's mother was
Philip IV's daughter, so he was another nephew, but the French did not want
him because he came through the female line and they suddenly remembered
that those siblings could not become king in France. So Edward declared war
in 1337 (after 9 years!). And it lasted for a 100 years! Yes, I've read the
books (except the last one) a long time ago, but there are better ways to
find out about the Capet family.

What John means by lack of references is: who is this 'foremost' scholar,
what book or article did he write this quote in (article/magazine/booktitle,
place, year, pages) and where did he get it. It is very hard to believe a
quote if it's put like this.
