medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
From: George FERZOCO <[log in to unmask]>
> Yes -- without turning this into an off-topic series of observations,
with all the respect due, i fail to see how a discussion of scholarly books
about the m.a. and the publishers who put them out could possibly be
"off-topic."
> it is important to accept the fact that some publishers with less exalted
reputations publish some gems,
everybody has to get lucky, sometime.
>and that some much-worshipped publishers allow their glory to mask the fact
that some of their products are clearly unworthy.
brings to my mind the near-recent Yale U.P. volume on Gothic Sculpture in the
prestigeous Pelican History of Art series.
the opening chapter of that, on Early Gothic (admitedly all i've read), is
really quite embarassing, to anyone who actually knows anything about the
subject.
>Despite the codicologist in me (or because of it?),
mmm.... Codicology is a definitely a Cause, not an effect.
>it's always a good thing to judge a work by its contents, not by its cover or
its particular imprimatur.
didn't realise that i was doing anything other than that, G.F.
i wish Mellen the best, only follow that old saying by WhatsisName, "By their
Works shall ye Know Them."
seems like a good enough policy, to me.
