medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
In between Tom's two stories is the idea that Edward IV was not the son of
Richard duke of York but of an archer. In his book on the Battle of
Bosworth, Michael K Jones takes this story seriously (perhaps the first to
do so) and makes a great deal of the fact that Richard's second son, Edmund,
was baptized in Rouen cathedral in great state, while Edward was not.
Personally, I think it more likely that Edward was baptized quickly because
of fear of infant mortality but I suppose there may be something in it.
