Dear Rolf,
I am currently applying for funding for a PhD project working on a Precambrian Crustal boundary in the Lewisian Gneiss Comnplex in NW Highlands, Scotland, together with John Wheeler (Liverpool), Simon Harley (Edinburgh) and Quentin Crowley (NIGL - dating lab). This is an exciting project (I wish I could do it myself), using a range of techniques (Structural geology, metamorphic petrology, geochronology (ICP-MS, SIMS, TIMS) to try to unravel the complicated Laxford Front and extablish whether or not this represents a terrane boundary. For background, try to read some papers by Clark friend and Pete Kinny.
The PhD would be based in Liverpool, with frequent travel to Edinburgh and a considerable amount of fieldwork in a gorgeous area. You will obvisouly get training in those techniques you do not yet master.
I should know by Christmas if we get the funding, so I suggest you contact me or John Wheeler again around this time, if you have not found another project in the meantime,
Good luck,
Maarten Krabbendam

Subject: Looking for PhD opportunity
Can anyone help me with or inform me about a PhD position in structural
geology? I have obtained my master degree in geology at Utrecht University,
the Netherlands in march 2007. My interests include a variaty of topics in
geology, including (shock)metamorphism, mineralogy, petrology and tectonics.
I am currently working for a small geo-consultant agency in the Netherlands.
However, at university I have learned that my future belongs in the
scientific community. I enjoy doing research, both lab and fieldwork based.
The idea of solving a scientific problem on a geological subject fills me
with joy. I am very motivated in focussing on a geological problem and
working hard to find a solution. Besides doing research I also enjoy
traveling and exploring the world. For that reason, I do not mind moving
abroad for a PhD position.
