We might distinguish between Discipline with a capital "D" and
discipline with a little "d" in order to reveal the practical aspects of
these issues.
Big "D" Disciplines may take to themselves what they see as key little
"d" disciplines - meaning key skills-as-knowledge that a practicioner in
that Discipline may be expected to have.
These key kills-as-knowledge will vary over time and they will vary in
terms of their capacity to sustain the Discipline. That is, Disciplines
usually drift away from a pragmatic set of skills-as-knowledge towards a
set of requirements as requirements of registration, membership etc.
A similar thing applies to research in terms of rigour and a recognised
field of academic work.
