medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Although it may not be exactly what you're looking for, David Nirenberg's
1996 _Communities of Violence_ is an important study dealing with Muslims,
Jews, and Christians in Al Andalus (Princeton UP).
Welcome to the list!
Dan

Subject: [M-R] Christians under Islam
medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Hi all,
I'm a brand-new member of this list, to which I was pointed by George
Ferzoco on the Mediev-L list. I'm a 59-year old, part time, medieval history
student at Leiden University and just started my first MA semester. One of
the courses is Europa and Islam, a literary seminar given by prof. W.
Blockmans. My question has to do with that.
Do any of you know if there are comparative studies about Christians living
under Islam in the Iberian Peninsula, Syria etc, and the Balkans? I have
found books in which the separate areas are studied, but no overviews about
this subject. I would like to compare them to descriptions of crusaders
embracing oriental life while living in the Holy Land during the 12th c. I
wonder if this is possible, but I have no doubt that some of you on this
list can give me pointers to that effect.
The books I found are f.i. Vladimir Goss's book (ed.) The meeting of two
worlds (Kalamazoo 1986) a start? I have Benvenisti (1972), Prawer
(1951-1952) and Stevenson (1907) on my to read list for Syria, Burns
(several years), Chejne (1974), Glick (1979), Kennedy (1996) (and maybe
Wolf?) for Spain. Of course I will look into Setton, e.o., eds. A history of
the Crusades (I-VI). The Balkans were a bit of a problem for me but luckily
I have found a nice overview on the subject in Dutch right at my University.
Thanks,
Henk 't Jong
