BELONGING IN EUROPE
THE AFRICAN DIASPORA AND WORK
c1400 - 1945
Between 8 – 9 November 2007 the Department of Geography, University College
London will host an interdisciplinary conference: Belonging in Europe: The
African Diaspora and Work c1400 – 1945. Its aim is to draw together
scholars researching the experiences of race, labour and work in Europe.
Themes to be explored will include the work undertaken by enslaved Africans
in Europe, the experiences of women and the politics of gender, pan-
European networks on anti-slavery campaigners, the relationship between
free and enslaved workers in Europe, the diversity of the experience of
work, the relationships between 'white' working Europeans and those of the
African Diaspora, the politics of ‘Race’ and the role of work in its
development, the role of women and gender, pan-European politics and
identity reflected in papers such as Negro Worker, issues of colonial
control, identity and resistance, narratives and artistic reflections on
all of these themes. Proposals for papers on any aspect of the subject
are, however, invited.
Abstracts of no more than 300 words (for papers of approx 30 mins) should

The conference will be held at the Department of Geography UCL, and is
supported by the UK Economic and Social Research Council. The second day
of the conference will be held at the Museum in Docklands, and free entry
will be included for all delegates to the newly opened gallery, London,
Sugar and Slavery. Booking information will be on the UCL website from mid-
July 2007.
