medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I'm grateful for these pointers, John. I'll follow up with the PG source. I
thought someone (Ward & Johnson?) had done a sourcing index for the LH as
has been done for the MR, but it would appear that's just one more bit of
evidence of my memory becoming less reliable.

medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Hi, Stan.
Almost certainly Dorotheus of Gaza. Given his time period, "abbas" could be
an honorific but in fact this D. was an abbot. In about 640 he withdrew
from from the monastery where he had been since entering religion. After a
brief period as a solitary he founded a new monastery of his own, which he
headed for the remainder of his life. Dorotheus the Younger (whom the
Byzantine Rite celebrates along with D. of Gaza on 5. June) was an abbot
too. But I don't think he's left any writings.
Ways to confirm. D. has a two-volume Greek/German bilingual, entitled
_Doctrinae diversae_/_Die geistliche Lehre_, that's volume 37 in the Fontes
Christiani series (Herder, 2000). He has a one-volume Greek/French
bilingual, _Oeuvres spirituelles_, that's volume 92 in the Sources
Chrétiennes series (Cerf, 1963). There's a Latin translation of his
writings in PG, vol. 88, cc. 1111-1842.
Best,
John Dillon
While we're here, my apologies for the howler "in context" (rather than "in
contact") in the bit quoted below. Rushing through these posts late at
night leads to some interesting substitutions (and to some rather banal
ones, too).
