Ron Peck's masterly and oft-overlooked seminal British gay film Nighthawks centres on a
gay school teacher and culminates in a scene of potential classroom conflict when the
pupils finally confront 'Sir' with a question about his sexuality....

I saw Freedom Writers with a high school teacher and another university
professor (all three of us have PhD's in education) and it was the teacher
who objected most to the film not so much on account of the classroom
dynamics but the representation of the administration and total lack of
support and resistance from other teachers re Ms. Gruwell's innovative
pedagogy. Apparently the student to student conflict and unruly classroom
behaviour isn't a stretch in the contemporary North American high school.
