hi fatina,
in my undergrad degree, i read an article on alfred heineken and his
response to a situation similar to what you have laid out below. heineken
thought of making beer bottles in the shape of bricks for housing and from
what i can remember from the article, the production costs were very high so
i don't know if the bottles ever went into production.
i can't remember who wrote a paper which included heineken's story, but i am
pretty sure it was a writer in design. i just did a google search and this
is a top hit with a picture:

hope it helps. good luck!
kind regards,
lauren tan

>dear all -- in several areas of big cities young people meet and consume
>important quantities of beer. the glass bottles are then thrown
>everywhere. this is often leading to a degradation of these places. for
>example in milan it is becoming a serious problem when these bottles are
>launched against important monuments (San Lorenzo Columns) or in the river
>(Navigli).

>does anyone of the list know of similar cases where CREATIVE solutions
>were proposed?

>best regards -- Fatina Saikaly
