Damage to the sculpture makes it appear that the Virgin's soul is shooting up toward heaven, rather than being held by JC:

But on the south portal at Strasbourg cathedral there's a version that could work well for classroom presentation to undergraduates:

Still on Dormition scenes, I like Pisano Bonanno's (ca. 1190) on the Porta San Ranieri (right [south] transept]) of Pisa's cathedral, where the image is really that of picking up an infant:
