I am trying something new with my graphic design readings and theory class this coming fall. Early on I am having them write a response to their reading using at least two typographic voices (i.e., two visually distinct fonts.) They will be required to explain the piece in question in a fair manner, essentially making a case for the author. Then in another form and a separate paragraph they can react to it in several possible ways. The aim will not be a single coherent essay.
I hope it will overcome the tendency to stack the deck in describing what they've read and to focus their comments on the actual subject of the reading assignment rather than "going off" on something that is not, in fact, what the author wrote.
If anyone has any experience with this form and can offer tips, let me know. If you are interested in how it works in this case, get in touch in mid to late September.
