It is archaic if a community has understood it and is ready to move on.
I don't think we are there yet.
Of course the idea does not give us a reliable, theorised/theorisable
framework. I tend to think that is the point. Just recognising the idea
seems helpful, I have certainly found it so.
With some people it helps them see that there may be a value in oblique
and diverse practices, and sometimes I feel it gives me a probe to
recognise that I'm swimming against too strong a tide so I'd better go
somewhere else.
