medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
This is a case in which the usual lexicons are not useful. From the context I take lavatorium to mean what otherwise is called a Piscina:
"PISCINA A basin free-standing or set in the wall near the altar, usually on the south side, for washing vessels used in the Eucharist." They tend to drain into the ground. I saw one such in the old chapel at Markenfield Hall in North Yorkshire a few years ago.

medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear list-members,
I have some problems with an old deed of foundation from the Cistercian
Abbey of Altenberg. The Latin text from 1260 sais:
"Sub isto etiam abate constructe sunt X altaria cum lavatorio in
ecclesia nostra."
I wonder if this could mean that each of the ten altars had a piscine.
Some authors identify the lavatorio with a baptismal font. Does
"lavatorio" has to be translated with singular?
Any help would be much appreciated!
